二、科恩的歌
『他的歌聲是難以忘懷的。低鳴陰鬱而沙啞，像是隨意哼唸而非吟唱，經過歲月的洗禮淬鍊，在心底重重的留下烙印。那種被酒浸過被菸薰過被火燒過被風吹過的聲喉，在冷漠的表情底下，是一股岩漿般的撼人力量，照亮人心最深最暗的底層。』（節錄。全文刊於小說《美麗失敗者》導讀，作者馬世芳。）

（2）《Tower of Song》同樣收錄於專輯《I'm Your Man》。科恩當時已經年過半百，再細看歌詞，這首歌頗有「回顧過往」的味道。科恩生長的蒙特婁（Montreal）是個具有印地安原住民歷史、早期英法殖民的文化熔爐，至今所屬的魁北克省仍在上演著公投獨立的戲碼。先天的環境加上後天的經歷，父親的早逝、四處流浪的不安定、感情上的起伏交錯，他比任何人都世故細膩。《Tower of Song》對科恩而言，也許是家鄉蒙特婁，也許是希臘小島，也許是生命中難忘的女人的懷抱，也許是他心田深處，靈魂最後的歸屬。

說明：
這首歌的歌詞涵義深遠，很多字句如果照字面上的意思翻是很奇怪的，我曾試過但還是放棄。最難的就是這句”The rich have got their channels in the bedrooms of the poor”找過外國網站歌迷的解釋（他們自己都覺得很難）、問過英文一級棒的吉利安，參照該句的前後詞意，最接近的意思就是「富人把爪牙伸進窮人家裡」，有「恃強凌弱、為所欲為」的延伸意思。下列的中譯歌詞是電影的版本，雖然有些句子還是怪怪的，但能翻成中文已經很強了。

這裡介紹兩個演唱版本，第一個是原版；另一個是傳記電影《Leonard Cohen：I'm Your Man》中U2為科恩演奏合音的版本。U2團員們小心翼翼的謹慎態度，完全就是一群粉絲在偶像面前害羞又興奮的樣子，尤其是主唱Bono，他簡直變回小學生了呵呵！

註：漢克．威廉斯（Hank Williams 1923~1953）出生於美國阿拉巴馬州。40年代開始職業性演出，被稱為現代鄉村音樂之父，進而也成為搖滾樂的先驅。1953年在演唱途中暴斃，死因診斷為施打毒品又喝威士忌，三十歲英年早逝。代表作《Your Cheating Heart》、《Why Don't You Love Me?》
